Beacon's Values

Beacon staff members are committed to fullfilling this mission by adhering to the following values:

Exemplary Competence – Seeks and maintains superior level of technical competence in their area of expertise. Exercises sound judgment.

Accountability - be accountable to others; respect each other's time. Attend meetings on time. Follow through on commitments. Don’t make unrealistic commitments or demands. Be clear about your expectations; make sure you are clear about the expectations of others (not the other person’s job to read your mind).

Team Player - be a team player. Work cooperatively and collaboratively. Be willing to help and support others, be willing to seek help and support when necessary. Be open and respectful of others’ ideas (especially "out of box"), loyal and consistent to team decisions when made.

Client/Partner Relations – Communicate often and effectively. Maintain an amicable and professional relationship with clients and partners. Respond to client needs in a timely manner (return phone calls by end of the day, or no later than 24 hours). Anticipate client needs, not just respond. Follow-thru on client requests whatever the source of the request if you are the ‘expert’.

Professionalism – Appropriate language (free of obscenities, sexism, and racism), emotional content, and dress for the situation. Accurate, neat, well composed written materials, communications, etc. Appropriate personal/professional relationship balance. Professional humility, let results speak.

Diversity – Seeks, respects and supports diversity in coworkers, partners, clients with authentic understanding of the value of diversity and its contribution to our work and assists in the creation and support of diversity in our projects and in our contribution to the housing community.

Integrity - Honesty, principled, do what you say you're going to do, make ethical, responsible decisions in alignment with Beacon values. “Work an honest day,” e.g. provide value. Be consistent, reliable.

Leadership – without formal authority. Take on a leadership role at meetings with clients and peers. Always strive to make a positive contribution in all settings. Be capable of bearing bad news or taking an unpopular stand. Be the "sharpest knife in the drawer." Lead across the bridge. Guide.

Problem Solving – Takes initiative when problems arise regardless of source. Seek out appropriate data and input, think and act creatively and collaboratively, act with urgency to drive solutions.

Conflict Resolution – Understands conflict is a part of communal life, committed to work individually and collaboratively as a group to resolve conflicts quickly and efficiently as they arise. Provide feedback to peers and agree to resolve conflicts by communicating in an open, direct, professional manner. No back talking.

Out of Reach Report:
The National Low Income Housing Coalition released the 2011 Out of Reach report.  This annual report  calculates the Housing Wage: the amount a person working full-time must earn to afford the Fair Market Rent on a modest two-bedroom unit. Out of Reach also calculates the number of hours one must work at the minimum wage and the average renter wage in order to afford typical rents. The Housing Wage for Washington State is $19.10 - while the typical renter wage is just $13.96.  As this report details, housing is out of each for many in our state.  To read the full report, click here.
